Minimally Invasive GYN

Birmingham’s Minimally Invasive GYN Leader

Since 2009, the Women’s Medical Center at Brookwood Baptist has been at the forefront of helping women get back to their lives through some of the most technologically advanced surgical treatments including robotic surgery. With this approach, our surgeons offer minimally invasive and more precise options for many complex surgical procedures. In fact, we are proud to be Birmingham’s leader in minimally invasive GYN surgeries*. Whether you need a hysterectomy, tubal ligation, myomectomy or tubal ligation reversal, you’re likely to be a candidate for robotic-assisted surgery.

The idea of a “robot” performing surgery may sound scary, but it isn’t as futuristic as it sounds. The machine is controlled by a trained and skilled doctor who is nearby, controlling the movements. Robotic-assisted surgery uses a three-dimensional, highly magnified camera, so the physician has a better view of the area being operated on. Since the robot minimizes the doctor’s movements, surgery becomes more precise. Scarring is also reduced because only small incisions are necessary.

If you need gynecologic surgery, or have been putting it off, robotic could be your ideal choice. Not only does robotic-assisted surgery lessen scarring, complications and pain, but you can also go into surgery without concerns. Healing time after robotic-assisted surgery is much shorter than that of traditional, open surgery. Women rarely have time to rest from their busy lives, and when you choose robotic-assisted surgery you know you’ll be back on your feet quickly.

Only you and your doctor can decide whether minimally invasive surgery is right for you, but here are a few questions to help you consider whether you might be an ideal candidate:

  • Would you like to avoid a large incision and scar?
  • Is it important that you are able to return to normal activities (e.g., driving) as soon as possible after surgery?
  • Would you like to minimize the length of time you are in the hospital?
  • Would you like to minimize blood loss and the need for blood transfusion(s) during surgery?
  • Would you like to limit the amount/duration of pain medications you take after surgery?
  • Would you like to minimize your risk of infection after the surgery?
  • Talk to your provider to see if you might be a candidate for minimally invasive surgery.
